There are no doubts: Matera was the real revelation of the summer!
With its fascinating history and its unique beauty, this gem of Basilicata literally leaves you speechless.

Matera was the first stop of my first on the road by car, which led me from Campania to the beautiful Valle d'Itria, in Puglia. Usually I prefer to move by public transport but, because of the short distance from Naples, I decided to try the experience of traveling by car, an experience that has been useful (as both in Basilicata and in Apulia public transport are to improve and increase) and exciting (the landscapes along the way are lovely!).
I left from Naples, reaching Matera through the absurd highway called "Basentana", that is really dangerous, especially in the evening.
From Naples the journey, although not so easy because of the dire conditions of the street, is very short: in about 2 hours and a half, in fact, you'll get to Matera.

Matera is a city that I recommend to visit: it is a place of rare beauty, unique in its kind.
And it is one of the oldest cities in the world, and those roads and those walls drenched in ancient history hit the mind in depth: the emotion is really great!
Once in Matera, you'll find yourself in what is the new Matera, a very elegant city full of shops and restaurants.
If you are by car, here there are also several parking, all very affordable and secure. Personally I found the parking of Via Lucana very convenient for the famous Sassi, and the rate of 0.50 cents per hour is really advantageous.

From the new town you'll arrive at the Sassi area, a real city with houses, churches and shops entirely carved into the rock.
This area was, until the early '50s, the focus of the rural culture of Matera, who lived in conditions of severe economic and social backwardness, such as to label the Sassi as "Italian Shame." A law in 1952 imposed, in fact, the abandonment of this area (especially for the poor hygienic conditions that existed within these peculiar dwellings) and the Sassi have long been forgotten until the recent work of re-evaluation, thanks to which this incredible city has returned to live.

First of all, if you can I recommend to stay in Matera at least 2-3 days, since there are a lot of things to see. The ancient city is in fact quite large and, for those interested in knowing in detail its history, you can book a guided tour of the entire city.

The ancient Matera is divided into two parts: the Sasso Barisano and the Sasso Caveoso, both interesting. Sasso Barisano is much less crowded and touristy, but it is here that I have had the pleasure of visiting one of the most special places in the city, the Peasant art museum (admission € 3), in which they are represented places of the ancient Matera, making use of authentic objects and environments of the time. Really very impressive!
In the Sasso Caveoso you will find a greater number of restaurants, craft shops (among the most distinctive handicrafts there are the funny whistles, with shapes and strange sounds. I have not been able to resist the charm of the water whistle, try it!) and so many churches.
Unmissable in the Sasso Caveoso are the Casa-grotta, a typical Sassi house, and the beautiful panorama of the Murgia Park, full of amazing trails and ancient caves.

During my stay I had the pleasure of staying in the old part of Matera, in a beautiful B&B completely immersed in the Sassi.
The B&B L'Arturo is located in the Sasso Barisano, and is a place very pleasant and fascinating, both for its breathtaking view on the Sassi and for the lovely design, intent on preserving the style of the typical houses of Matera.
Very good is also the breakfast, based on fruit, local bread, local cold cuts and much more. A lovely little place where to come back!

I conclude by suggesting a few dishes that I loved, like the ciualedda and the beans soups, strictly accompanied by the well known bread of the city, and invite you to visit this amazing Italian jewel.
Matera will amaze you!
