After suggested you "Crime and Punishment" in the first post of the new blog section "TRAVEL BOOKS", today I continue with another novel by Dostoevsky: "The Gambler".
I recently returned from Baden-Baden, a beautiful and friendly town in Southern Germany, and I learned with surprise that the great Russian writer was inspired by these places (and in particular by the famous casino) for the atmosphere of his novel "the Gambler".

The novel tells the adventures of Alexei and his love for the beautiful Paulina, although the real protagonist of the novel is the game, examined in all its forms and through different types of players.
Dostoevsky wrote "The Gambler" in a very short time, driven by the economic pressures of his publisher, dictating it to a young typist who, then, will become his second wife.
The atmosphere of the gaming rooms is inspired to the casino of the famous town of Baden-Baden, that is still today a center of great importance for fans of tables and roulette.

And reading this wonderful book, it seems to be in the halls of the elegant Casino, all richly and lavishly furnished, with rooms embellished with marble and fantastic beautiful statues.
You can visit the casino in the morning with a guided tour, for only 7 euros. You can literally taste with your eyes the frescoes in the various rooms (unsurpassed, in my opinion, is the mood recreated in the "winter garden"). Clearly, also in the evening the Casino awaits your visit: with a ticket of only 5 euros, you will be allowed at the gaming tables, where you can play poker, blackjack, roulette, or, more simply, sit at the bar for a drink.

The atmosphere is really different than the American casinos (than Atlantic City, for example): here you can enter only in suits and ties, and the watchword, in every corner, is always elegance.
Both for the players and for tourists, the casino has a great appeal: it is, first of all, a veritable museum (the expert Marlene Dietrich said it was the most beautiful casino in the world).

In ogni caso, in queste bellissime sale, Dostoevskij a lungo giocò e molto perse.

Anyway, in these beautiful rooms, Dostoevsky played for a long period and lost a lot of money.
The city remembers his visit with a bust erected on the first floor of the house where he stayed. Then, for fans of Russian literature, also Turgenev set his novel "Smoke" in Baden-Baden, a news that I have learned during the visit of the city and another reason to start reading this book.

In short, a good idea would be to read "The Gambler" by Dostoyevsky during your stay in Baden-Baden, leafing through the last pages while seated in the bar of the same casino that is one of the main elements of the novel.
