Halfway between the most famous Pompeii and Herculaneum, in the modern Torre Annunziata, there is another treasure of Campania: the archaeological complex of Oplontis, which includes the so-called Villa of Poppea, luxurious villa of OTIUM, and the Villa of Crassius Tertius, farm particularly focused on the cultivation of pomegranates, unfortunately closed to the public.

The ancient Oplontis was a suburban settlement of Pompeii, a residential center, characterized by the presence of houses, public buildings, a hotel for travelers. Reaching this site (leased in Via Sepolcri and open daily from 08:30 to 18:00) is very simple:
  • by train: circumvesuviana-stop: 'Torre Annunziata-Oplonti' (directions: Naples-Sorrento or Naples-Poggiomarino or Naples-Torre Annunziata). From the station, the site is a 5 minute walk.
  • by car: take the exit 'Torre Annunziata Sud' of the highway A3 Napoli-Salerno and follow the signs 'Scavi di Olponti'. The site does not have a car parking, so it is advisable to get there by train.

Once outside the station, do not expect a friendly city: tourism services, museums and typical shops and restaurants are almost entirely absent.
About the elegant Torre Annunziata, the 'city of the white art' (pasta) par excellence, famous in Italy and in the world for the great ability of its artisans, that
offered high quality products beloved not only in Campania, there is no trace.

You can only imagine the ancient beauty of this charming city of 'Campania felix', the prosperous campania that, thanks to its fertility and its wonderful climate, provided agricultural products and wellness holidays to the Imperial Rome, thanks to the words of Goethe, who greet visitors at the entrance of the archaeological excavations.

We had lunch in Torre Annunziata with the table arranged on the seashore. Everyone was happy to live in those places, some said it would be impossible to live without the sight of the sea. To me is it enough that image stays in my spirit”. from 'Italian Journey'.

Regarding the archaeological complex, however, only the wonderful Villa of Poppea, the magnificent building (dating back to the first half of the first century BC) attributed to Poppea Sabina, second wife of Emperor Nero, for the presence of a 'painted inscription on an amphora, addressed to Secundus, freedman of Poppea, is opened to the public.
The house was empty at the time of the eruption of 79 AD. Many amphorae and furnishings found piled in different rooms testify, in fact, that during the tragic event were ongoing repairs of damage caused by one of the many and frequent earthquakes prior to the explosion.

The Villa is so charming: mainly developed around two sectors, the atrium and the peristyle, it is equipped with terraces, residential rooms and a thermal plant.
The eastern area is almost entirely excavated, while the west lies below a historic military building, the former Real Fabbrica d'Armi.
In the southwest, the bedrooms are of great artistic value for the richness of their wall decoration, with frescoes
portraying II style perspective views.

The frescoes are almost all intact: you'll find cupids, birds, fruit baskets (famous is the basket of figs) and many other foods that adorned the Roman banquets.

Really interesting is the presence on the wall of the triclinium of a fresco depicting a cake looking very inviting.
Back to the recipe of this delight was not possible, but probably it was a food very similar to the famous 'cassata siciliana', with marzipan and fruit.

The Villa was also full of marble statues that, at present, are not visible to visitors, and that adorned the edges of a huge swimming pool, surrounded by a lawn of plane trees, oleanders and lemons.

However, every corner of this old luxury dwelling hides a treasure. Wandering around the rooms and corridors of this majestic Villa (UNESCO heritage) is a unique experience: a real plunge into the past!
Along with the most famous archaeological sites of Pompeii and Herculaneum, also the Oplontis (with Stabia and Boscoreale) ruins really deserve a visit.

Also, only few steps from the ruins, in the ancient Via Mazzini, you will find the only survivor of the many pasta factories that made the city famous in the past: the Pastificio Setaro. Here you will find many types of homemade pasta, with a thousand of different flavors. On the website of this factory, then, there are also historical recipes that you can not miss.

That's all for this time!
