Vesuvius in the background, the ancient city that 'lives' with the modern .... this explains the fascination of Herculaneum!
Yeah, just in the heart of this town in the province of Naples Herculaneum, the old Roman city destroyed by the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD,
lies undisturbed.
Although the city was not smaller than the nearby Pompeii, the archaeological site is much less extensive (2-3 hours is enough to visit all), since most of the ruins are still buried under the new city, but in my opinion it is most impressive and best preserved.

Walking through the streets of the old town you can have a clear idea of the life, customs and costumes of this period.
The different dynamics of burial, compared to the nearby Pompeii, have in fact led to a better preservation of organic materials and housing.
Get ready to go back in time, walking through these narrow streets surrounded by shops and multi-storey buildings, which still retain charred clothes, beams and furniture.

COME RAGGIUNGERE ERCOLANO:

HOW TO GET TO HERCULANEUM:
  • by car: easy way (the ruins are not far from the highway exit 'Ercolano'), but because of the presence of a single, small, expensive parking, I don't recommend  you this option.
  • by train: it is, in my opinion, the most convenient and fast way. The trains of 'Circumvesuviana' arrive in 'Ercolano Scavi' in about 15 minutes from Naples and 30 from Sorrento.

During the visit to the ruins I recommend you (always) have a map in hand, so as not to get lost in the ruins.
(If you want, the interesting audio guide for the ruins
and the Villa of the Papyri costs 7.00 Euros).
But let's see what are the most interesting places:
- The House of the Deer which, thanks to the stamp found on a piece of charred bread, has gone back to the owner, a freedman.
- The House of the Wooden Partition so named because of the discovery of a kind of wooden folding door.

- The House of Aristide, close to the beach.
- The House of Neptune and Amphitrite, with beautiful mosaics
- The baths
- The theater
- The House of the Black Hall belonging to the freedman Lucius Venidius Ennychus, as evidenced by the discovery of twenty wax tablets.

- The fornices, overlooking the sea, where the inhabitants of Herculaneum had taken refuge in a desperate attempt to save themselves.
(The numerous and highly visible skeletons under these arches arouse great emotion: men, women, children, with opened mouth, because they were choked by ashes, and the hands on the face).
...but this is only a small part of the incredible 'treasure' that you will find at Herculaneum: this place is so valuable that it has been included in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites

Just a short walk from the ruins, then, do not miss the Villa of the Papyri, so called because it preserved a library of thousands of papyrus, and the MAV, the archaeological museum of Vesuvius, whose purpose is to inform the reality of everyday life for all the cities destroyed by the eruption of 79 AD, through multi-sensory effects, virtual books and holograms.
This museum is really well done, you will be fascinated!

So, that's all.
Until the next time!

  2. salve, volevo farti notare due cose:
    - per quanto riguarda questa frase "Il merito del buono stato dei reperti è da attribuire, in gran parte, al Packard Humanities Institute che, per ovviare alla vergognosa incuria locale, ha promosso un progetto di restauro che sta dando ottimi risultati." non reputo corretto quanto descritto. La Packard Humanities Institute ha iniziato ad interessarsi ad Herculaneum solo nel 2001 e la loro collaborazione è stata maggiormente focalizzata nella sezione "estrazione dal suolo" che "nel mantenimento di quanto estratto";
    - MAV sta per Museo Archeologico Virtuale e la distanza Ercolano-Sorrento è di 45/50 minuti in Circumvesuviana (lo dico solo per non confondere coloro che, leggendo il tuo interessante articolo, sarebbero interessati a venire ;) ).
