CUMA: ALLA SCOPERTA DEI MISTICI LUOGHI DELLA SIBILLA CUMANA

Avete mai sentito parlare della Sibilla Cumana, uno dei più famosi oracoli del mondo antico?
All'interno dell'Acropoli di Cuma, a pochi km da Napoli, si trova il suo suggestivo Antro, il luogo in cui Enea incontrò la profetessa.

Have you ever heard about the Cumaean Sibyl, one of the most famous oracles of the ancient world?

Inside the Acropolis of Cuma, just a few kilometers from Naples, there is her charming Cave, the place where Aeneas met the prophetess.

Virgilio narra, infatti, di come la Sacerdotessa d'Apollo predisse il futuro ad Enea, accompagnandolo al vicino Lago D'Averno (allora considerato l'ingresso agli inferi), per spingerlo a cercare il padre nell'Ade.
Come Enea, chiunque visitava la Sibilla in cerca di consigli era introdotto in una tenebrosa galleria, scavata nella collina di Cuma, dove l'indistinta figura della sacerdotessa scriveva le sue profezie su foglie trascinate dal vento.

Virgil said, in fact, as the priestess of Apollo foretold the future to Aeneas, accompanying him to the nearby Lago D'Averno (considered to be the entrance to the underworld), to induce him to seek his father into Hades.
As Aeneas, anyone visiting the Sibyl seeking advice was introduced into a dark tunnel, carved into the hill of Cuma, where the shadowy figure of the priestess wrote her prophecies on leaves carried along by the wind.

Purtroppo, a causa di una frana, l'Antro della Sibilla è attualmente chiuso, ma solo guardando da fuori si riesce a cogliere la grande suggestività di questo mistico luogo, che in passato servì probabilmente come corridoio militare.

Unfortunately, due to a rockfall, the Sybil's Cave is currently closed, but just looking from the outside you can grasp the great suggestiveness of this mystical place, that was probably a military corridor. 

Ma l'Acropoli di Cuma, oltre ad ospitare la Grotta della Sibilla, è famosa per la sua strategica e incantevole posizione geografica (il panorama è mozzafiato) e per le sue antiche rovine (fu una delle prime colonie della Magna Grecia): conserva, infatti, i monumentali podi, sulle due terrazze, del Tempio di Apollo e di Giove.

But the Acropolis of Cuma, in addition to hosting the Cave of the Sibyl, it's charming tanks to its strategic and stunning geographical location (the view is breathtaking) and to its ancient ruins: one of the first colonies of Magna Grecia, it preserves the monumental podiums, on two terraces, of the Temple of Apollo and Jupiter.

  
Il biglietto per l'Antro della Sibilla e per l'Acropoli ha un costo di 4 euro (2 euro per gli studenti). Lo stesso biglietto consente l'ingresso anche all'Anfiteatro Flavio, alle Terme e al Castello di Baia.

COME ARRIVARE A CUMA:

• con i mezzi pubblici: 
  Cumana, fermata Fusaro + Bus EAV
  per le linee Bus EAV www.eavbus.it

• con l'auto: per raggiungere l’Acropoli di Cuma in autovettura occorre imboccare la Tangenziale di Napoli direzione Pozzuoli. Uscita n.13 Cuma. Seguire la statale e svoltare al primo incrocio a sinistra. Proseguire dritto e passare sotto l'Arco Felice Vecchio. Al primo incrocio, girare a destra, proseguire e svoltare alla prima traversa a sinistra.

The ticket for the Sybil's Cave and the Acropolis has a cost of 4 € (2 € for students). The same ticket i valid even  for the Flavian Amphitheatre, the Baths and the Castle of Baia.
 
HOW TO GET TO CUMA:

•  by public transport:

     Cumana, stop Fusaro + Bus EAV
     Bus lines for EAV www.eavbus.it

•  by car: you have to take the 'Tangenziale' of Naples towards Pozzuoli. Exit number 13 Cuma. Follow the road and turn left at the first intersection. Go straight and pass under the 'Arco Felice Vecchio'. At the first intersection, turn right, go on and take the first left.
