NEW YORK: LE TOP 10 (+1..)

Riassumere New York in 10 punti non è affatto semplice.
Io non ci sono riuscita.
Ecco, quindi, la mia Top 10+1...

To summarize New York in 10 points is not easy.
Personally I did not succeed.
So this is my Top 10 + 1...

{Sconsiglio l'audio-guida, decisamente poco interessante sia per Ellis Island che per Liberty Island}

1. Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty. Located at the mouth of the Hudson River, Ellis Island, home of the Immigration Museum and Liberty Island, home of the Statue of Liberty, are the main attractions in the city. The boats to both islands continually depart from Battery Park and the fare is about $ 17. This ticket allows you to visit Ellis Island and its museum and Liberty Island, but it doesn't give the right to visit the pedestal and the crown of Lady Liberty, that require different tickets, available only on the official website. (you have to buy them in advance)
{Don't do the audio guide. I found it to be a waste of time and very boring}

2. Times Square.

2. Times Square. Although I don't prefer this part of New York, Times Square can not be in the standings, as it is one of the main symbols of the city.
The district of Times Square takes its name from the New York Times that, in 1904, moved its headquarters into the building from which, every year at midnight, on December 31, the ball celebrating the new year
is lowered.
Overcrowded at any time of the day or night, it's never cold here, and because the thousands of people who crowd the street and because the bright advertising signs.
Times Square is an area full of theaters, restaurants and shops. You will find Hard Rock Café, Hollywood Planet, M&Ms store, Bubba Gump and much more.

3. Grand Central.
{Qui troverete la pasticceria Magnolia Bakery, che deve la sua notorietà al telefilm Sex and The City}

3. Grand Central. Elegant and monumental, location of several Hollywood films, from the romantic to the action, with its imposing clock and its starry sky, Grand Central Station is extremely charming. Among the numerous shops and rails, be careful not to get lost!
{Here you will find Magnolia Bakery, famous thanks to the sitcom Sex and The City}

{Ho trovato molto carino, poi, il Merchant's House Museum, unico esempio di abitazione newyorkese dell'800}

4. Museums. In the Big Apple there are a lot of different museums. The admission can be: always free (American Museum of Natural History), free only during particular days (MoMA is free on Fridays from 16 p.m. to 20 p.m.) or based on free offer (Guggenheim Museum on Saturday from 17:45 p.m. to 19:45 p.m.; Met all days of the week).
To visit all these museums can be difficult, especially for people who are in town for a few days.
Anyway, you can't miss the MoMa, the Met and the Museum of Natural History.
{I found the Merchant's House Museum, one of the finest surviving examples of  1800's architecture, very nice}

5. Central Park.

5. Central Park. Huge and varied, it is the most famous park in the world. The nature is so beautiful that you'll forget to be in New York, if it were not for the skyscrapers that rise from the tops of the trees. Open daily from 6 a.m. to 1 a.m., it is spectacular in all seasons. You can move by foot, by car or by bike around the park, and there are a lot of interesting places: Jacklin Kennedy-Onassis Reservoir, the statue of Alice in Wonderland, the romantic castle and Strawberry Fields, in memory of John Lennon.

6. Empire State Building.

6. Empire State Building. Located between 5th Avenue and 34th Street, the Empire State Building is not only one of the best points from which you can admire the stunning Manhattan skyline, but also one of the most romantic places in the City.
Visitors can go up to the 86th floor, open air, or to the 102th floor, not open air.
As one of the most popular attractions is practically always crowded. To avoid endless queues, I recommend you book your ticket online.
At 86th floor is also possible to find, at particular times during the weekend, a saxophonist ready to make the atmosphere even more impressive (it isn't a rarity to attend some marriage proposal with the city lights in the background!).

7. Ground Zero-World Trade Center.
Resti delle Torri Gemelle, testimonianze dei sopravvissuti e precisa ricostruzione dei fatti, rendono il museo davvero coinvolgente e commovente. {L'audio-guida, in questo caso, è stata una buona scelta. Ve la consiglio.}

7. Ground Zero-World Trade Center. Located in the beautiful Lower Manhattan, this area, known as Ground Zero after the attacks of 11 September 2001, is home of the 9/11 Memorial & Museum. The imposing and impressive Memorial can be seen for free, just walking down the street.
The visit to the museum requires, instead, a ticket that costs $ 24 for adults and $ 15 for children (Tuesday afternoon the access to the museum, however, is free simply by booking tickets in advance).
Remains of the Twin Towers, testimonies of survivors and detailed reconstruction of the facts, make the museum really addictive and touching.
{The audio-guide, in this case, was a good choice. I recommend it}

8. Brooklyn Bridge.

8. Brooklyn Bridge. Suspended on the East River, the Brooklyn Bridge connects Brooklyn to Lower Manhattan. Every day it is crossed by thousands of people (by car, by bike or by foot), and for a long time it was the longest suspension bridge in the world.
Nowadays it is so charming, so a walk is a must, especially during a sunny day.
The metro stations closest to the bridge from Manhattan are City Hall and Chambers, from Brooklyn are York street and High Street.
It's a beautiful walk that allows you to see the Statue of Liberty in the distance, when the weather is mild.
I suggest to leave from Manhattan at sunset, in order to arrive in Brooklyn that is already evening, to admire the bright skyline of Manhattan from Brooklyn Heights.

9. Musical a Broadway.
I teatri sono, infatti, sempre affollati, e i biglietti sold out in poche ore.
Io ho visto 'Il Fantasma dell'Opera'.

9. Broadway musicals. A trip to New York is not complete without a Broadway musical (even for who is not fluent in English), as the city is home to some of the most important stages in the world.
The theaters are, in fact, always crowded, and the tickets sold out immediately.
A show can cost more than 100$, but you can save money by purchasing your ticket online or at the TKTS booths, that sell half-price tickets (they are last minute deals and the disadvantage is having to watch the show on the day of purchase).
The TKTS booths are three:
1) the TKTS booth in Times Square, where to buy tickets for shows only for the current day.
2) TKTS at South Street Seaport, where to buy tickets for shows  for the current day and for the next morning.
3) downtown Brooklyn (1 MetroTech Center), where to buy tickets for shows for the current day and for the next morning.
I saw 'The Phantom of the Opera'.
The actors were very good and the music and the scenery really engaging. It's a good choice!

10. Chinatown.

10. Chinatown. Located in the south-east of Manhattan, Chinatown is  one of the most characteristic districts of New York. Constantly expanding, it has virtually engulfed the nearby Little Italy, where, apart from some restaurant that retains its original name, there is nothing left about Italian culture (if you are looking for italian products, sneak a peak at Arthur Ave in The Bronx). The neighborhood is not exactly elegant, but it is great for purchases of clothes, bags and various knick-knacks at low cost prices. The market of Canal Street is huge and impressive, but you can feel the true Chinese culture on the bordering streets: here you can find the typical restaurants and shops with the strangest food products, such as ginger roots, dried vegetables and fish and hundreds of chickens hanging in the window. (I admit to not having had the courage to try them).
Then, the Collect Pond Park raises not far from Canal Street and this is the place where people (especially old people) meet to sing, dance and play chess (Xiangqi)!
Finally, take a look at the Buddhist temple of the Mahayana in this area.

11. Coney Island.

11. Coney Island. About 45 minutes far from Manhattan by subway, the area of Coney Island was the birthplace, in 1895, of the first Luna Park of the story: the Luna.
Survived the Great Depression and many other events over the years that wanted its closure, it is still a magical place.
Although it is not a theme park with the most sophisticated and spectacular attractions, its rides are still able to amaze and amuse. You must try the historical roller coaster (The Cyclone) and the Ferris Wheel (Deno's Wonder Wheel). Also, you can not leave the area without a walk on the wide beach while eating a fabulous Nathan's hot dog (i love hot dog with bacon!).
Keep an eye on the calendar, then! With a little luck you can see the mermaid parade or Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest, one of the most famous binges of America.

Finally, go to Harlem on Sunday to join a gospel choir!
