Visitare New York era il mio sogno fin da bambina.
Ricordo che trascorrevo le ore a
fantasticare su lunghe corse tra i grattacieli a bordo dei leggendari taxi gialli,
pattinate sul ghiaccio a Central Park e shopping nei negozi di
giocattoli più grandi del mondo.
Desideravo vedere questa città così
da tanto che, una volta scesa dall'aereo, credevo stessi sognando!

Ho trascorso un mese a New York tra lezioni di italiano ad autentici new yorkers e indimenticabili e frenetiche giornate alla scoperta di quanto più possibile della Grande Mela.
Sono partita da Napoli il 26 maggio con volo AirFrance e destinazione Aeroporto Internazionale JFK.
Riguardo al volo, l'aereo era comodo e
spazioso, e la cena davvero ottima, ma ho preferito il ritorno con
Delta Airlines, per la struttura più moderna e i
maggiori servizi a disposizione (per 16 $ è possibile usufruire di
connessione Wi-Fi), per una più vasta scelta in fatto di film e
videogiochi (anche in lingua italiana) e per il simpaticissimo video
di benvenuto a bordo (troppo divertente, meritava una menzione)!
Atterrata in suolo americano, l'aeroporto si è rivelato molto diverso da come lo immaginassi.

Ero convinta di trovare fiumi di gente
da ogni parte del mondo, turisti, pericolosi pendolari pronti ad investirti, ma non è stato
così. Nell'aeroporto non regna per niente il caos, anzi. E' tutto
molto calmo e organizzato, forse gli otto terminal smistano per bene
la folla.
I minuziosi controlli americani, poi, si sono rivelati quelli standard, tranne che per i seri signori che vi faranno qualche foto e prenderanno le vostre impronte digitali. Niente di complicato, comunque.

arrivare a Manhattan. Si può prendere il taxi (circa 70$), la metro,
la limousine (potete farvi un'idea dei prezzi su www.carmellimo.com) o la navetta (se il vostro albergo offre
questo servizio).
Io ho optato per la metro.
Una singola corsa in metro costa 2,50$,

I left Naples on May 26 with an AirFrance flight and destination JFK International Airport.
Regarding the flight, the plane was comfortable and spacious, and dinner really good, but I preferred the return with Delta Airlines, for the most modern facility and more services available (for $ 16 you can take advantage of Wi-Fi), for a wider choice of movies and video games and for the very nice welcome video on board (too funny. Deserved a mention)!
Landed on American soil, the airport turned out to be very different from what I imagined.
I was convinced to find streams of people from all over the world, tourists, hazardous commuters ready to hit you, but it was not so. The airport is not chaotic. It's very calm and organized, perhaps the eight terminals sorting good for the crowd.
The custom checks are no longer meticulous than in other countries, except for serious gentlemen who will take your pictures and fingerprints. Nothing complicated, however.
From the airport there are several ways to reach Manhattan. You can take a taxi (about $ 70), the metro, the limo (you can get an idea of prices on www.carmellimo.com) or the shuttle (if your hotel offers this service).
I chose the metro.
The JFK AirTrain, an automatic train, 24-hour 24, departes from the airport and connects every terminal with each other and with two metro stations: Jamaica and Howard Beach. The rides inside the airport are free, the others have a cost of $ 5 (you can buy the tickets at the metro stations).
The trains to Manhattan, Midtown, depart from Jamaica, instead the trains to Lower Manhattan and Brooklyn depart from Howard Beach.
A single metro ride costs $ 2.50, but there are subscriptions for every need. If you plan to use the subway often, take a look at this site http://web.mta.info/metrocard/.

automatico, attivo 24 ore su 24, che collega i terminal tra di loro
e con due fermate della metro: Jamaica e Howard Beach. Gli
spostamenti interni all'aeroporto sono gratuiti, gli altri hanno un

Il primo giorno ho soggiornato nei pressi di Times Square per familiarizzare un po' con la città(hotel four points by Sheraton, che offre tariffe davvero convenienti), ma la mattina seguente, di buon ora, ero diretta verso quella che sarebbe stata la mia casa per un mese, nel Bronx.
Durante la mia permanenza nella Grande
Mela ho notato che la maggior parte dei turisti si limita alle strade
di Manhattan. Beh..non sanno cosa si perdono!
Gli altri distretti di New York, ovvero
Brooklyn, Queens, Bronx, Staten Island, meritano davvero una visita.
Il Bronx (che ho preferito), in particolare, è noto
universalmente come uno dei posti più pericolosi del mondo, ma in
pochi sanno che è molto grande e, come in altre zone di New York, ci
sono quartieri tranquillissimi e altri che lo sono un po' meno. A
questo proposito voglio consigliarvi il sito della polizia di New
York che presenta una mappa della pericolosità di tutte le strade

(Personalmente l'ho trovato molto utile e confortante, soprattutto dopo aver scoperto che la mia stazione della metro sarebbe stata Gun Hill Road, e il nome non è di certo invitante!).
Inoltre, lo Yankee Stadium, la casa di Edgar Allan-Poe e il vasto Zoo del Bronx (più che uno Zoo sembra una riserva) sono tappe molto interessanti.

During my stay in the Big Apple, I noticed that the most of tourists is limited to the streets of Manhattan. But the other districts of New York (Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, Staten Island) really deserves a visit.
The Bronx (that I prefer), particularly, is known worldwide as one of the most dangerous places in the world, but few people know that it is a very large place and, as in other parts of New York, there are very quiet neighborhoods and others not very quiet. In this regard, I want to suggest you the map of the New York Police Department that reveals city's most dangerous areas.(http://maps.nyc.gov/crime/)
(Personally I found it very useful and comforting, especially after finding out that the name of my metro station was Gun Hill Road, and the name is certainly not inviting).
In addition, Yankee Stadium, the home of Edgar Allan Poe and the Bronx Zoo (that seems a reserve) are very interesting steps in the Bronx.

Il mio appartamento (prenotato su www.airbnb.it ad un buon prezzo) si trovava a
Baychester, zona prevalentemente afroamericana e molto tranquilla. Mi
sono trovata divinamente, sia perchè il tanto verde e le strade ariose
sono davvero un'esigenza dopo un'intera giornata tra le strade di Manhattan, almeno per chi come me non è abituato a
traffico e smog di quella portata, sia perchè le villette a schiera con i
balconcini su cui si riuniscono le signore anziane a spettegolare, tipiche di molte pellicole statunitensi, mi
facevano sentire parte di un film, e questo mi divertiva!
Da Baychester si raggiunge Midtown in
circa 45 minuti, a meno che non si abbia la fortuna di riuscire a
prendere un treno express. Il viaggio non è proprio breve, ma il
tempo passa velocemente. La metro di New York è, infatti, forse la
sua principale attrazione, non solo per la presenza di musicisti e
artisti vari, ma soprattutto per tutte le diverse persone che si incontrano (e ce ne sono di bizzarre).
Inoltre, è molto efficiente e comoda.
All'inizio può disorientare un po' ma, capito il meccanismo, è davvero semplice da usare.
Ma di questo e molto altro vi parlerò la prossima volta!
My apartment (booked on www.airbnb.com) was in Baychester, African-American and very quiet area. I found this place perfect, and because the green areas and the large streets are a necessity after a full day in Manhattan, at least for someone like me who is not used to traffic and smog of that scale, and because the townhouses with balconies, on which the elderly ladies gossip, typical of many American movies, made me feel part of a film, and it was really funny!
From Baychester you can reach Midtown in about 45 minutes, unless you have the good fortune to take an express train. The trip is not really short, but time passes quickly. The New York subway is, in fact, perhaps the main attraction of the City, not only for the presence of musicians and other artists, but especially for all different people that you can meet (often very bizarre people!). Also, it is very efficient and convenient. At first it may be confusing, but understood the mechanism, it is really simple to use.
