GRECIA LOW COST: L'INCREDIBILE SPETTACOLO DELLE METEORE

Meteora, letteralmente "in mezzo all'aria", è una suggestiva località della Grecia Settentrionale, sede di un complesso di monasteri patrimonio dell'Unesco.
Non ne avevo mai sentito parlare prima, ma, mentre sfogliavo le guide di viaggio in libreria (mia passione!), la foto di un piccolo monastero costruito su uno sperone di roccia mi ha rapita a tal punto da farmi decidere, in quel preciso istante, che quel luogo non poteva assolutamente aspettare.
Per cui, tornata a casa, mi sono subito messa all'opera per organizzare la vacanza al meglio, e i prezzi bassi di aereo e alloggi hanno remato a mio favore, per fortuna!
La mia vacanza è durata 10 giorni e, dal momento che sono partita ad Agosto, ne ho approfittato per rilassarmi un po' sotto il sole della Grecia. 
Dopo aver raggiunto Salonicco con volo Ryanair e aver trascorso una settimana tra le magnifiche spiagge della Penisola Calcidica (leggi qui), sono partita alla scoperta di uno dei luoghi più mozzafiato d'Europa: Meteora.

Meteora, literally "in the middle of the sky", is a picturesque town of Northern Greece. It is one of the largest and most important complexes of Orthodox monasteries, included on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
I had never heard about it before, but while flipping through the travel guides in the library (my passion!), a picture of a small monastery built on a spur of rock kidnapped me so much that I decided, at that precise moment, that this place could not wait.  
So, when I came back home, I immediately set to work to organize the vacation to the fullest, and the low prices of plane and accommodation helped me, fortunately!  
My vacation lasted 10 days and, as I left in August, I took the opportunity to relax under the sun of Greece.  
After reaching Thessaloniki with Ryanair flight and spending a week among the beautiful beaches of Chalkidiki (read more), I started to discover one of the most breathtaking places in Europe: Meteora.

COME ARRIVARE A METEORA:
Durante l'intera vacanza mi sono spostata con i mezzi pubblici.
Dalla stazione di Salonicco (che si raggiunge con il bus numero 78) partono i pullman per Trikala, da cui poi, in circa 15 minuti, si raggiunge, con un altro pullman, Kalambaka, graziosa cittadina ai piedi di queste imponenti montagne e ben attrezzata per i visitatori. Fantastiche sono le tante taverne che, per massimo 16-17 euro, offrono pietanze deliziose.
Il viaggio dura complessivamente circa 3 ore e mezza e il paesaggio risulta essere sempre abbastanza monotono, almeno fino a quando non si iniziano a scorgere queste 'strane' rocce, da cui è impossibile staccare lo sguardo.

HOW TO REACH METEORA: 
During the whole trip I moved with public transport. 
The buses to Trikala depart from the station of Thessaloniki (that you can reach by bus number 78). Then, with another bus, in about 15 minutes, you can reach Kalambaka, a charming town at the foot of these towering mountains and well equipped for visitors.  
Cool are the many taverns that, for a maximum of 16-17 euros, offer delicious food.
The trip lasts about 3 and a half hours and the scenery is always monotonous, at least until you start to see these 'strange' rocks, from which it is impossible to take your eyes off.

Da Kalambaka è possibile raggiungere, anche a piedi (è una piacevole passeggiata con le montagne sullo sfondo), il più piccolo, ma a mio avviso ancora più caratteristico, villaggio di Kastraki. Io ho soggiornato proprio in quest'ultimo, in particolare presso Ziogas Rooms, e ve lo straconsiglio!
La struttura, come anche le camere, è ben rifinita e pulita e il personale è gentilissimo (la proprietaria, inoltre, parla anche un ottimo italiano), ma a meritare maggiormente una menzione è il fantastico panorama dalle stanze.

From Kalambaka you can reach, also by foot (it is a pleasant walk with mountains in the background), the smallest, but in my opinion even more quaint, village of Kastraki. I just stayed in the latter, in particular at Ziogas Rooms...super accommodation!  
The structure, as well as the rooms, is well laid out and clean and the staff is friendly, but it is the fantastic view from the rooms to deverve a mention.

I MONASTERI (o METEORE):
Fino al secolo scorso i monasteri erano raggiungibili solo con scale a pioli o con sistemi a carrucola (il cui solo pensiero mi faceva venire i brividi), ora, invece, ci sono ascensori (che non sembrano molto sicuri) e scale scavate nella roccia la cui salita è impegnativa, ma fattibile.

THE MONASTERIES: 
Until the last century the monasteries were reached only by ladders or pulley systems (the thought gives me the shivers), now, however, there are elevators (which doesn't seem very safe) and stairs carved into the rock, where the climb is challenging, but doable.

Ho impiegato un solo giorno per visitarli tutti (3 euro a monastero), ma occhio al calendario: ognuno di essi ha un diverso giorno di chiusura.
Da Kalambaka e da Kastraki partono i pullman (alle 9.00, 11.00, 15.00, con fermate a richiesta) che conducono ai due monasteri più grandi: Megalo Meteorou e Roussanou. Da queste due fermate, se si è sprovvisti di auto, gli altri monasteri sono raggiungibili solo a piedi.
Ma non spaventatevi, il cammino non è faticoso e regala scorci spettacolari.
I monasteri sono 6, mozzafiato all'esterno, molto graziosi all'interno.  

It spent just one day to see them all (3 euros for each monastery), but look at the calendar: each of them has a different closing day.  
The bus, that leads to the two largest monasteries: Megalo Meteorou and Roussanou, departs from Kalambaka and Kastraki.(at 9:00, 11:00, 15:00, with stops on request)
From these two stops, if you are without a car, the other monasteries are accessible only by foot.  
But don't panic, the path is not laborious and offers spectacular views.   
The monasteries are six, stunning on the outside, very nice inside.

Il più bello è, senza dubbio, Megalo Meteorou. Qui è possibile ammirare non solo la chiesa ortodossa, ma anche il museo, le cucine, l’ossario e il refettorio.

The most beautiful is, undoubtedly, Megalo Meteorou. Here you can admire not only the Orthodox Church, but also the museum, the kitchens, the ossuary and the refectory.

Ma anche gli altri sono molto suggestivi! Il tour completo è davvero piacevole.

But also the others are very striking! The whole tour is really nice.

Personalmente ho trovato questo luogo davvero incantevole.  
Uno spettacolo di questo genere è unico al mondo.
