Siena surprised me: the three days I spent in this small town in Tuscany really impressed me.
I absolutely have to go back!

Siena is known above all for its palio (as soon as I want to take part in), in those days the city literally overflows with tourists; but what I have learned is that Siena is beautiful in every months of the year.
Of course, every visit can only start from the beautiful Piazza del Campo, the undisputed symbol of the city and the heart of all its civil and tourist life. With its unique shell-shaped plant, its unmistakable Torre del Mangia (where the Palazzo Pubblico is located) and its Fonte Gaia, Piazza del Campo will surely exhausted the memory of your cell phone by taking photos. Inside the Palazzo Pubblico, then, it is absolutely worth visiting the Civic Museum, where you will find, among the many works, also the famous frescoes of Lorenzetti with the Allegory of Good and Bad Government.

Not far away, a visit to the splendid Cathedral is unmissable: with its majestic exteriors and its interiors full of depictions of esoteric and religious symbols, its beautiful pulpit made by Nicola Pisano, the Piccolomini bookcase with some of the most interesting examples of manuscript texts, it will not disappoint you.
Another fundamental monument of religious imprint is the Baptistery: undisputed protagonist here, certainly the Baptismal Font placed at the center of the structure, to which Donatello has worked, among others.

After visiting the Duomo and the Baptistery, I advise you not to forget the complex of Santa Maria della Scala, dating back to the IX-XI century: in the Middle Ages it was a hospital dedicated to the sick and pilgrims, a place full of mystery and history; today it hosts a vast museum complex where you can admire various kinds of exhibitions. Not far from Santa Maria della Scala you will find the National Art Gallery: here are preserved the masterpieces of many artists of the past (just to name a few: Duccio di Buoninsegna, Simone Martini and Lorenzetti).

During my visit to the city, also and especially thanks to the organization made available by the very kind of Siena Municipality, I was able to deepen the figure of one of the greatest Italian writers who, right here in Siena where he was born, has set many of his literary masterpieces: I'm talking about Federigo Tozzi.
It was an immense pleasure to wander through the alleys and narrow cobbled streets of Siena, retracing the various stages of the writer's life and being able to touch the scenarios of his most famous novels: the paternal tavern still open to the public as a restaurant, the endless and verdant hills that literally surround the city, roofs and chimneys all bundled together when you look from the highest points: all the atmospheres, in short, that are breathed in authentic masterpieces like "With the eyes closed", "Three crosses" , "The farm" ...

But Siena is not only its monuments, and also from the culinary point of view it will surely satisfy you: ribollita, pici, salami of all kinds, but also and above all the vast choice of local sweets: my favorites, without a doubt, the delicious ricciarelli, simple but tasty biscuits made with marzipan, sugar and egg white.

During my weekend in Siena I had the pleasure of staying at the cozy and elegant Hotel Santa Caterina ***: it is a structure just outside the city, only ten minutes walk from the central Piazza del Campo.
