ALLA SCOPERTA DI VITERBO, CUORE DELLA TUSCIA

Ho visitato Viterbo durante il mio tour tra Umbria e Tuscia, ed è stata una delle scoperte più gradite: Viterbo, infatti, coniuga alla perfezione le atmosfere intime e rarefatte dei piccoli borghi medievali allo spirito della città; sa essere schiva e solitaria ma anche affollata e festosa.

I visited Viterbo during my tour of Umbria and Tuscia, one of the most pleasant discoveries: Viterbo, in fact, perfectly combines the intimate and rarefied atmosphere of medieval villages to the spirit of the city; Viterbo is solitary and quiet but even crowded and festive.

Il centro storico è interamente delimitato dalle antiche mura, intatte e molto evocative, con porte monumentali che danno l'accesso ai vari quartieri. La parte più visitata di Viterbo è senza dubbio la Piazza di San Lorenzo: qui, infatti, si trovano la Cattedrale e il Palazzo Papale, con la sua loggia che è un po' il simbolo della città: in questa struttura fu spostata temporaneamente la sede papale e qui ebbe luogo il primo conclave per l'elezione pontificia.

Chiaramente andare via da Viterbo senza una visita al Palazzo Papale è impossibile: oltre i bellissimi esterni, infatti, dalla terrazza interna del monumento potrete ammirare, grazie alla visita guidata, un bellissimo panorama e alcune stanze della struttura.

The old town is completely surrounded by ancient walls, intact and very evocative, with monumental gates that give access to various neighborhoods. The most visited part of Viterbo is undoubtedly the San Lorenzo Square: here, in fact, you can found the Cathedral and the Papal Palace, with its loggia which is the symbol of the city: in this property was temporarily moved the seat papal and here took place the first papal conclave for the election.

Nei pressi del Palazzo Papale, imperdibile è il quartiere medievale di San Pellegrino: passeggiando lungo queste stradine, infatti, vi sembrerà di aver abbandonato le atmosfere della città per il relax e il silenzio che solo i piccoli borghi sanno offrire; qui ogni passo è una scoperta, ogni vicolo vale una fotografia, ogni balcone ha la sua composizione floreale: un vero e proprio spettacolo!

Inoltre, vi consiglio, in Piazza della Morte, di visitare Viterbo Sotterranea (l'ingresso costa 4 euro e comprende una piccola degustazione): si tratta di un giro nel sottosuolo della città, che i viterbesi hanno usato con varie funzioni durante i secoli. La visita seppur breve, sa essere suggestiva.

Near the Papal Palace there is the medieval quarter of San Pellegrino: strolling along these streets, it seems to have abandoned the city atmosphere for relaxation and silence that only small towns can offer; here every step is a discovery, every alley is worth a photograph, each balcony has its own flower arrangement: a real spectacle!

Also, I recommend, in Piazza della Morte, visit Viterbo Underground (entry costs 4 € and includes a small tasting): this is a tour of the underground city: very evocative!

Durante il tour vi verrà anche raccontata la storia di Santa Rosa, la beata simbolo della città, in memoria della quale, durante i festeggiamenti del 3 settembre a cui mi riprometto di partecipare al più presto, un centinaio di uomini portano in processione la cosiddetta Macchina di Santa Rosa, un imponente campanile mobile e tutto illuminato di circa 30 metri e dal peso ragguardevole: questa manifestazione fa parte del patrimonio immateriale dell'Unesco.

Ma il consiglio principale, se capitate a Viterbo, è di passeggiare a caso lungo tutto il centro storico, abbandonando le strade più turistiche e spingendovi in punti più remoti e silenziosi: qui, come le foto mostrano chiaramente, troverete la Viterbo più bella.

During the tour you'll also known the story of Santa Rosa, the saint symbol of the city: Viterbo celebrates her during the 3 September : this particolar event, named Macchina di Santa Rosa, is part of UNESCO's intangible heritage.

My principal tip is to walk randomly along the entire historic center, abandoning the more touristy streets and exploring the more remote and quieter points: here, as the photos clearly show, you will find the most beautiful Viterbo.

Durante il mio soggiorno a Viterbo, ho avuto il piacere di soggiornare presso l'Hotel Ristorante Biscetti; l'hotel si trova a Bagnaia, un piccolo borgo molto suggestivo distante pochi chilometri da Viterbo, facilmente raggiungibile sia con i mezzi pubblici (nelle immediate vicinanze ci sono sia la fermata del bus che la stazione del treno Roma Nord) che con la macchina; inoltre a poche centinaia di metri dall'hotel troverete Villa Lante, un fantastico giardino rinascimentale di cui vi parlerò a breve, uno dei monumenti più visitati del viterbese.

L'Hotel Ristorante Biscetti offre camere silenziose e pulite, di recente ristrutturazione, molte delle quali affacciano sulla torre simbolo di Bagnaia, per un risveglio dal sapore medievale.

La gestione è familiare e amichevole: vi sentirete a casa!

La cucina è tipica della zona (ottima la carne!), con diversi spunti creativi ed interessanti; casereccia, gustosa e abbondante, è ideale per rifocillarvi dopo le lunghe passeggiate a Viterbo.

During my stay in Viterbo, I had the pleasure of staying at the Hotel Ristorante Biscetti; the hotel is located in Bagnaia, a small and picturesque village just a few kilometers from Viterbo, easily reachable by public transport (near you can found the bus stop and the train station) and by car; The hotel is located very close to Villa Lante, a fantastic Renaissance garden, one of the most visited monuments of Viterbo.

Hotel Ristorante Biscetti offers quiet, clean rooms, recently renovated, many of which overlook the symbol tower of Bagnaia, for a medieval revival!

The management is familiar and friendly: you feel at home!

The cuisine is typical of the area (meat is very good!), with different creative and interesting ideas; homemade, tasty and plentiful, is ideal for refreshments after the long walks in Viterbo.

Quando si visita il Lazio, spesso, ci si ferma alla sola Roma: beh, ho potuto appurare personalmente che è un grande errore: Viterbo, come tanti altri luoghi della provincia laziale, merita sicuramente la vostra attenzione!

When people visit Lazio often focus only on Roma, this is a big mistake: Viterbo, like so many other places in the province of Lazio, is truly fascinating!
