'I BORGHI PIU' BELLI D'ITALIA': SPELLO

Umbria is a truly special region: a riot of breathtaking views and good food, small town full of history and art and cute craft shops.
Spello is one of many unforgettable places that this region has to offer: a magical medieval village, with a small old town to discover and enviable cuisine.

With merit, it is included in the list of "The most beautiful villages in Italy".
Getting there is very simple: I, during my tour of Umbria and Tuscany, always moved by public transportation. I reached this place by train: you can just take, from Perugia, a train to Foligno and, in about 30 minutes, you'll arrive at the station in Spello (it is the stop after Assisi and, in my opinion, the whole day is suitable for visiting both)

Spello is still surrounded by ancient Roman walls (in the days of the Empire, it was named "Splendidissima Colonia Julia") with three doors: Porta Consolare (the most beautiful), and  Porta Urbica e Porta Venere .
Clearly, there isn't much to see in terms of cultural history: you will find some nice churches (in particular, do not miss the Santa Maria Maggiore, with the Baglioni Chapel, painted by Pinturicchio); the Town Hall, in which you can visit the Casa Romana, probably belonged to the mother of Emperor Vespasiano; and a small art gallery.

But the highlight of Spello are undoubtedly its narrow streets, the stunning views in every alley, the scent of distant times, of past and forgotten times that yet you can breathe along these streets.
You will wander around the old town, looking for the perfect framing for the photo of the century.
Spello is known for an event that takes place in the months of May and June: the Flower Festival of Corpus Christi. The city, during the event, turns into an endless and beautiful lawn, each balcony is decorated with flowers and plants of all kinds: everything has guaranteed to the city the title of "capital of the flowers".

I, unfortunately, have been there at the end of December and I could not delight the sight and smell with the colors and scents of this amazing event, but I can say that even during my visit, there were glimpses full of greenery and colorful flowers: even in winter there are many balconies festively decorated!
From my short trip, I realized that the city has to be very active from the point of view of events: under the arcades of the Town Hall, there was a big group of pipers and dancers, superbly dressed with medieval clothes, which, playing and dancing, accompanied people around the city.

I spent a memorable afternoon in Spello (unfortunately the only rainy afternoon of my Italian tour), and I look forward to return in the small Umbrian village, during the summer months, for the Flower Festival.

If you are in Umbria, then, do not miss Spello: your eyes will thank you forever!
